Yoni Steaming for Painful Periods, Cramps, and PMS

Your period doesn’t have to be painful.

If you experience cramps, bloating, lower back and leg pain, fatigue, mood swings, or other intense symptoms during your cycle, you're not alone. Thankfully there is a better way — one that is gentle, holistic, and rooted in deep honoring of the wisdom of the womb and her innate ability to heal.

Yoni steaming, also known as vaginal steaming, is an ancient practice that offers natural support for menstrual pain relief. It works by increasing circulation to the womb, relaxing pelvic muscles, and helping your body release stagnation that is the root cause of your discomfort.

What This Page Covers

❓ Why Do Periods Hurt?

In short, your painful periods are caused by stagnation in the uterus. The uterus, like all organs, has an intelligent and natural cleansing process. However, as we navigate the stressors and toxicities of modern life, our bodies (very much including our wombs!), sometimes require additional support. Just like we exfoliate the skin, do breath work to clear the lungs, drink detoxifying tea to aid the liver, we steam to support the natural cleanse of the womb.

Your uterus cramps in reaction to the stagnation. However, the uterus doesn't cramp because she is bad, or angry, or trying to hurt you. Cramping is an attempt to release the stagnation/blockage that the body needs to clear. If there is no stagnation in the uterus there is no need for the cramping and incredibly it stops.

Cramps can worsen when:

  • Circulation in the pelvic bowl is poor
  • Old blood or stagnation is present
  • Inflammation or imbalances are unaddressed
  • Trauma and associated emotions are stored within

Steaming can help your body release, reset, and regulate. And remember, a uterus without stagnation is a happy uterus with no need to cramp and delighted to offer you the experience of balanced and pain free menstrual cycles. This is why we steam!

♨️ How Yoni Steaming May Support Natural Relief from Period Pain

  • Increases circulation and blood flow
  • Encourages complete uterine cleansing -->  releasing dark/ oxidized blood from previous cycles and clots leading to pain free fresh red blood periods over time
  • Clears stagnation which reduces period cramps and spasms
  • Infuses herbal medicine to support uterine healing
  • Relaxes pelvic muscles for symptom relief and eventual root cause healing
  • Drops body into parasympathetic nervous system, the body's natural healing state
  • Decreases bloating, fatigue, and irritability
  • Shortens and lightens your menstrual flow building toward 3-4 days of moderate flow of fresh red blood
  • Improves cycle regularity, especially after coming off birth control or hormonal shifts
  • Supports embodied awareness, deepened relationship to the womb, and living in alignment with the rhythm of your cycle.

Many women begin to feel shifts in their cycle within 2–3 months of consistent steaming — and often sooner.

“I did notice a difference on my period blood this cycle, it was a happy red, and almost no clotting!”

— Jacquie

🗓️ When to Yoni Steam for Period Pain?

For best results for steaming for painful periods, steam three days before (but not necessarily immediately before) and three days after your period/menstruation begins.

Example Rhythm of Steam Protocol for Painful Periods:
🌗 Steam 3 times after your period ends. Day 1 of your cycle is the first day of your bleed. Ex: If you bleed for 4 days, steam on days 5, 6, and 7 of your menstrual cycle.

🌗 Steam 3 times after ovulation and a few days before your period. Ex: If you have a 28 day cycle, steam on days 23, 24, 25.

❌ Do not steam while bleeding.

🔄 Consistency brings the best results—many see changes within 1–3 months.

If your periods are very painful, you have large clots, or lots of brown/oxidized blood at the start and end of your bleed, consider doing a "full uterine re-set," which entails steaming every day (outside of days of menstruation). Do this for one menstrual cycle. If your cycle doesn't shorten beneath 28 days and there is still stagnation/pain, consider steaming daily (outside of days of menstruation) for an additional 1-2 cycles. Then return to steaming  according to the above protocol.

If after a "full uterine re-set" of daily steaming your cycle shortens beneath 28 days and you feel you would still benefit from lots of steaming to eliminate stagnation and lead to pain free periods, consider steaming every other day (always, outside of menstruation). This allows for regular steaming to continue to support deep cleansing while offering a gentler pace for your body to re-balance and heal.

🎉 It's helpful to steam regularly and track your cycle’s changes. We encourage you to note and celebrate your achievements! Going from a bottle of Advil to just a few pills is a win. Going from three bags of pads to one bag is a win. It is all a process moving you toward the ultimate celebration of your first pain free and balanced period!

Yesterday I had some twinges of pain throughout the day, but the pain was only a 1-3/10 rather than a 7-8 like my past two cycles. Yay!.”

⏰ How Long Should I Yoni Steam for Painful Periods?

There are generally two main set-ups for steaming: the Gentle Steam Set-Up which is shorter and uses a mild heat level and the Extended Steam Set-up which is longer and uses a moderate and sustained heat level.

💛 Gentle Steam (10–12 minutes)

  • Recommended for first time and beginner steamers and those with sensitivities including:
      • Shorter cycles, 27 days or less
      • Prone to infections (yeast, bacteria, herpes)
      • Indications of excess heat in the body (vaginal dryness, night sweats, hot flashes, etc)
      • Under the age of 13
      • Prone to fresh red spotting/ trickle bleeding
      • Spontaneous bleeding or 2 periods per month
      • Use of an IUD

Steps for Gentle Steam Set-up:

This Gentle Steam Set-up, with the pot off the burner, is best for first time steamers and super gentle and restorative steams.

  • Heat yoni steam herbs on moderate heat for 10 minutes
  • If using a burner inside your seat, turn off the burner. If using an alternative heat source, remove your yoni steam pot from the heat and transfer to your seat.
  • Wait for steam to settle and appear at a safe heat level.
  • Test the heat level by hovering the back of your hand over the steam.
  • If the heat level feels soft and gentle, slowly position yourself on your seat/over your steam pot.
  • Check in with yourself and your body. If at anytime you wonder if the temperature of the steam is too hot, stand up immediately and then re-evaluate. It should feel good.
  • Inhale, Exhale, Enjoy.

🔥 Extended Steam (20–30 minutes)

  • Recommended for those with cycles of 28 days of longer, none of the above sensitivities, and/or post menopausal women
  • Uses an active heat source (like a burner) while steaming, maintaining a medium (but still gentle) heat level for the duration of your steam
  • Best for those without sensitivities that need extra cleansing support to address painful periods from menstrual stagnation, cramps, and fibroids
  • And please remember, always, including for Extended Steams, the heat level of the steam should feel good to you and your yoni.

Start slowly. Your womb will guide you.

If you’re unsure, begin with the Gentle Steam Set-up for your first few steams. Notice how your body responds, and adjust over time. There is no rush — and as you deepen with your practice you'll build confidence/self-trust, find your own rhythm, and steam according to your inner knowing and intuition.

💗 Emotional Support Through Yoni Steaming for Painful Periods

Yoni steaming is not only physical — it’s emotional, energetic, and deeply personal.

The womb is more than a reproductive organ. She is a memory holder, a processor of emotion, and often a container for unspoken pain. When we push through or suppress our experiences, that pain doesn’t disappear — it buries deeper and often speaks through our cycles.

Too often, we’re handed pills to manage symptoms. And while medication has its place, yoni steaming offers another path — one that supports root-cause healing and a deeper relationship with your body.

This practice invites you inward — to feel, to soften, to release. In the warmth of the steam, the womb is heard. What no longer serves can be let go. This is womb healing. This is sovereign power.

Yoni steaming provides a sacred pause — a moment to:

  • Slow down and listen inward
  • Meet what's real for you in the moment
  • Deepen in relationship to your cyclical body
  • Discover the sacredness of your womb

Steaming may bring forward buried feelings. You might feel sadness, anger, gratitude, or nothing at all — all of it is welcome.

“When I started steaming, I didn’t expect to cry. But something softened. I found myself sobbing in relief, finally feeling I was held.”

— Rebecca W

Painful periods aren’t just about cramps.

They are often the body’s way of saying: There is more here to feel. To honor. To heal.

Steaming works on all levels of your being — mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, ancestral — and connects you with the wisdom of your womb.

We know this path can feel tender and, at times, overwhelming. The practice of steam reminds us to walk the path of healing with gentleness, self-compassion, and devotion.

Caring For Yourself During Your Period: Natural Relief for Period Pain and Cramping

Yoni steaming is a powerful tool — but it doesn’t stand alone. To experience deep, lasting relief from painful periods, we must also look at how we care for ourselves during the bleed (menstruation).

Too often, we override the cyclical wisdom of our bodies -  particularly that of the bleed.

We push through, load the calendar, and medicate the pain rather than inquiring about it. But painful periods aren't random, they are a message from the womb — a request for realignment with self and a different kind of care.

When we allow ourselves to listen, soften, and truly tend to our bleed, the entire experience of cycling shifts. Menstruation becomes something to enjoy rather than endure.

🌓 Honor the Wisdom of Rest

Just as we rise and rest daily with the rhythm of the sun, we cycle monthly with the rhythm of the moon, with its phases of illumination and descent — honoring the dark in order to receive the light.

We understand that a full night’s sleep helps us feel our best the next day. In the same way, how you rest during this bleed will shape how you experience the next one. This is not indulgence; it's embodied alignment.

Bleeding is a time of heightened intuition, a thinning of the veils, and an opportunity for deep healing, but we have to slow down to access it. As you can, plan ahead, schedule less events and more support, and give yourself time to be still and unstimulated (don't just get in bed, also put the phone down for a bit).

🍵 Nourish Yourself

Eat & Drink Well

In the days leading up to and during your period, choose foods that are warming, nutrient-dense, and grounding. Cold causes constriction whereas warmth fosters relaxation and release.

  • Slow-cooked stews with high-quality meats and colorful root vegetables
  • Mineral-rich teas with nettle and red raspberry leaf (like our Thrive blend)
  • Take it easy: Let someone else cook for you, defrost meals you prepped earlier in your cycle, or order takeout.

Stay Warm

Think chunky socks and cozy slippers. Keep the body and wombspace wrapped in layers and scarves. Avoid bare feet and exposed necks. Warmth is essential for supporting complete release.

🩸 Choose Products That Let You Flow

No More Tampons

Our founder’s aha moment came when she used a tampon to stop her niece’s nosebleed — and it worked, really well. The realization was clear: tampons block flow of blood and that’s the opposite of what your womb needs.

Stopping blood inside the vaginal canal — especially in synthetic materials — contributes to stagnation, which is the root of cramps and pain. If you must use one, do so sparingly, and choose only 100% organic cotton.

Menstrual Cups

We love a good cup. Menstrual cups hold the blood while supporting flow, reducing waste, and they can last a lifetime. Choose one made from body-safe materials, and revel in the relief of never having to buy period products again.

Plus, cups invite deeper relationship with your blood — its color, texture, and rhythm — and offer the opportunity to return it to the Earth in gratitude, connection, and love.

Free Flow

You may notice it feels better not to insert something into your body, especially when you have painful periods. Some flow-friendly options include period undies, cloth pads, organic cotton pads, and free bleeding when the space allows.

🌿 Gentle Movement, Nature, Stillness

This is not the time for the gym’s noise and hype. Your body is already working hard.

Instead, let yourself unwind:

  • Take quiet walks in nature — leave your phone behind
  • Do pleasurable hip circles and easeful stretching
  • Exhale into restorative yoga or surrender in a Yoga Nidra
  • Breathe gently and generously — it is safe to slow down

💗 Sex and Sensuality on Your Terms

There is nothing wrong with sex while bleeding — if aligned, it can be deep and beautiful. However, it may be a wonderful time to pause, turn inward, and release instead of receive.

Consider sensual care:

  • Baths with essential oils and flower petals
  • Foot rubs, womb massage, or resting in silence
  • Trays of nourishing food and herbal tea brought to bed

Take the time for pleasure and honor what truly feels good to you.

 ✨ The Healing Journey

When we’re in the habit of rushing, numbing, and prioritizing everything else over ourselves, it can be challenging to create the space to slow down. And even a little (or a lot) scary. Because we don't get to predict or plan for what will be unearthed when we unwind enough to look, see, meet, and feel what is there in the quiet stillness.

We invite you to do what you can, move gently and hold yourself in love and compassion. You've got this, truly.

This is the transmission of womb wisdom and the medicine of steam. Profound healing often unfolds, paradoxically, with what feels like miraculous speed when we slow down, prioritize pleasure, and practice being in devotional relationship with our cyclical bodies.

FAQs

Does yoni steaming really help with period pain?

Many women report reduced cramps, shorter periods, and a more easeful bleed after 1–3 months of consistent steaming. While every body is unique, this ancient practice continues to support menstrual wellness across cultures and the globe.

Can I steam during my period?

No. You should never steam while actively bleeding. There is no need to stimulate further release at this time. Instead, during menstruation, please head the invitation to rest, hydrate, and nourish.

What yoni steam herbs are best for cramps and PMS?

For cycles 28 days and longer, we recommend our Release Cleansing Blend, crafted with motherwort, nettle, and calendula for extra support for clearing stagnation and supporting the health of the blood.

For cycles 27 days and shorter, we recommend our Rejuvenate Strengthening Blend, crafted with mugwort, shepherd's purse, astragalus, and ashwagandha for gentle cleansing support for clearing stagnation while strengthening the womb so it can balance back to full 28 day cycles.
